To all community members planning to join us in the walk, we will meet at 4:00 pm at the Ferry Building at 289 Mare Island Way. From there, we will walk to the historical museum where we will have informational tables, free HIV and STI testing, public recognition of community members who have helped the Solano AIDS Coalition fulfill our mission. We will also have public speakers and entertainment. Please join us on this day to honor the memory of our brothers and sisters who lost their lives to this pandemic and show support for those living with the virus.
World AIDS Day is almost here, this year the Solano AIDS Coalition invites the Community of Solano County to join us in our very first “AIDS Walk in Vallejo” let’s get together and celebrate the lives we lost through this disease and support the ones infected with the virus.
For the past 20 years the Solano AIDS Coalition as been working hard to bring HIV/AIDS Education and prevention and other first necessity programs to the city of Vallejo, this year we need your help to raise money to continue with our work.
World AIDS Day, the annual observance aimed at raising awareness of the global epidemic of AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) and the spread of HIV (human immunodeficiency virus). World AIDS Day occurs on December 1 and was established by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1988 to facilitate the exchange of information among national and local governments, international organizations, and individuals. When the first World AIDS Day was held in 1988, an estimated 90,000 to 150,000 people were infected with HIV, which causes AIDS. Within two decades more than 33 million people were living with HIV infection, and since 1981, when the first AIDS case was reported, some 25 million people have died of the disease. As a result, AIDS awareness became increasingly concerned with educating societies about HIV/AIDS through the unification and monetary support of international organizations.
This year’s theme for World AIDS Day is “World AIDS Day 35: Remember and Commit.” This annual event serves as a reminder of the global struggle to end HIV-related stigma, an opportunity to honor those we have lost, and a rallying cry to continue working toward a day when HIV is no longer a public health threat.
The first World AIDS Day took place in 1988, providing a platform to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and honor the lives affected by the epidemic. This year marks the 35th commemoration of this important day. Over the past 35 years, there has been significant progress in addressing HIV/AIDS thanks to advancements in medical research, increased access to treatment and prevention, and a broader understanding of the virus.
