Vallejo Police Department Community Town Hall

Vallejo Police Department Community Town Hall

VALLEJO – The Vallejo Police Department invites you attend a Community Town Hall meeting on Wednesday, December 20, 2023, from 6:00 to 7:00 P.M. The meeting will be held at the Vallejo Room located at 505 Santa Clara Street, Vallejo, CA 94590 (lower level of the JFK library). The department is hosting this meeting to address the recent officer-involved shooting that occurred on November 20, 2023.

On November 20, 2023 at approximately 11:43 A.M., officers of the Vallejo Police Department responded to an armed robbery that had just occurred in the 3400 block of Sonoma Blvd. Two victims reported being robbed at gunpoint by multiple suspects. Responding officers located the vehicle described by the victims in the immediate area. The suspect vehicle led officers on a short vehicle pursuit that concluded when the suspects crashed into an uninvolved vehicle near Tennessee St. and Sonoma Blvd. The occupants of the suspect vehicle exited and began to run away which initiated a foot pursuit by officers on scene. Following a brief foot chase, an officer-involved shooting occurred. The suspect, a 17-year-old juvenile, sustained a minor injury believed to be a result of the shooting. A loaded handgun was recovered at the scene of the arrest.

The Solano County Major Crimes Task Force responded and assumed control of the entire criminal investigation. The City of Vallejo has hired a third-party investigator to conduct the administrative investigation to determine if any officers violated department policies. Finally, the police department convened its Critical Incident Review Board which conducts a holistic evaluation of the incident from an agency improvement perspective.

The officer involved in this shooting is Corporal Matthew Komoda, a 17-year police veteran. Corporal Komoda was assigned to the patrol division at the time of this critical incident. Immediately following the event, Corporal Komoda was placed on administrative leave pursuant to department policy.

Because this incident involved the arrest of a juvenile, state law prohibits the release of information related to the investigation. Additionally, the District Attorney’s Office filed a motion that was granted in Solano County Superior Court to preclude the Vallejo Police Department from releasing video evidence in this case. As such, the information and details provided to the public regarding this case will continue to be very limited. The department will not be able to provide video evidence, to include body-worn camera footage, of this incident to the public at this time.

Despite these limitations, the Vallejo Police Department has chosen to hold this town hall meeting to provide maximum transparency and inform the public about the internal processes that are initiated following an officer-involved shooting. These processes include: the responsibility of the Solano County Major Crimes Task Force, the role of the independent investigator conducting the administrative investigation, and our internal Critical Incident Review Board (CIRB).

Vallejo residents and stakeholders are encouraged to attend this meeting. We look forward to engaging with you and listening to your concerns.
