Lost Boats of Mare Island Memorial

Lost Boats of Mare Island Memorial

In 2006 the final resting place of the USS Wahoo, a submarine built at Mare Island Naval Shipyard and lost at sea during WWII was located north of Hokkaido, Japan in Russian waters south of Sakhalin Island. The U.S.Navy later confirmed that the vessel found in those dark and cold waters by a Russian five crew was the Wahoo with her crew. On October 11, 2007 a memorial service was held in Hawaii on the anniversary of her loss at sea, October 11, 1943. Simultaneous to the service in Hawaii, we held a memorial service here on Mare Island for the Wahoo, her Commander Dudley Morton and her crew. The following year we honored all 7 submarines built on Mare Island and lost at sea during WWII. We have held a memorial each year, since. Join us at the historic WWII submarine berth, Berth 6 on Mare Island where the Landing Craft Gunboat LCS-102 is docked, for a program of history, music and the laying of a wreath for all 7 submarines and their crews now “on eternal patrol”. Text or call Myrna Hayes 707-249-9633 for info and Historic photos. Berth 6: A St @Nimitz Ave. Mare Island, Vallejo CA 94592.
