Grateful Day On The Waterfront 2023

Celebrate the Days Between at Grateful Day On The Waterfront, Sunday August 6th at the Mare Island Coal Sheds in Vallejo. This all-ages single day music festival on the Napa River Waterfront will feature local food & drinks, craft vendors, Burning Man Art, and Live Dead all day with performances by:

  • Cubensis: The Grateful Dead Experience w/ Very Special Guest (2 sets)
  • Grateful Brass by Jazz Mafia
  • The Alligators
  • Lovin’ Dead
  • Love Mischief

Enjoy a summer day listening to the music of the Grateful Dead, dancing on the waterfront promenade with friends and fam. This incredible Mare Island site features an impressive array of sculptures, beautiful waterfront sunset views, great local food and craft vendors, local beer and wine, plenty of free parking and lots of room to dance or chill in your lawn chair (feel free to bring chairs- one side will be designated for sitting and one side for dancers only).

GRATEFUL DAY ON THE WATERFRONT FEATURED PERFORMERS:

Cubensis is the longest-running Grateful Dead Tribute in existence, having logged over 4000 shows since 1987. Cubensis offers an amazing, ever-evolving recreation of the live Grateful Dead experience. Nate LaPointe is a rising star on the national Grateful Dead scene and this band can take the music to heights that only come with many years of musical bonding. A Very Special Guest (we can’t share who yet) will join Cubensis for two sets of high-energy double-drummer electric live Dead.

Jazz Mafia’s Grateful Brass reimagines the music of the Grateful Dead with brass, drums and the formidable vocals of Erin Honeywell. The music digs deep into the Grateful Dead discography with creative re-imaginations infused with the ebullient spirit of New Orleans Second Line, trance-like grooves of Afrobeat, brass-driven energy of Balkan music, and energetic Afro-Cuban polyrhythms, all sitting on top of a heavy foundation of funk. Grateful Brass is led by Adam Theis who is a current member of The Wolf Pack with Bob Weir & Wolf Bros and whose arrangements are featured in their live shows & albums. Some of the finest musicians on the West Coast have joined Theis in creating this exciting offshoot of the Bay Area music collective Jazz Mafia.

The Alligators are a high-energy, chompin’ tribute to the early years- the Pigpen Era of the Grateful Dead. This is the House Band for the Skull & Roses Fest and they are here to Rock You! Expect high octane, whiskey-soaked versions of oft-neglected songs from the Pigpen Era, which form the bedrock of the Grateful Dead songbook.

Havin’ fun and playing live Dead is what Lovin’ Dead does best, striving to provide a unique yet familiar musical experience. The fellas are students of the songs, exploring interactive psychedelic jams, smokin’ guitar work, soulful three-part vocal harmonies & always Searching for the Sound. Jay Wilcox and Jeff Quigley have been playing this music together for over 25 years. Zach Jones is gaining a reputation for his impressive ability to channel a young Bobby on vocals and guitar.

Love Mischief is Sacramento’s finest Jamband, clearly destined for National recognition. This high-energy 5 piece is led by Berkelee College of Music grads the Curtin Brothers on guitars and vocals. They will offer their interpretations of the Grateful Dead Songbook in between sets on the main stage, and perhaps a few originals or special requests. LM has consistently exceeded my expectations this past year, I am excited to share their virtuosity and brilliance with a wider audience.

Featured Vendors:

Hearth & Soul Pizza from Napa will be there with their beautiful tiled wood-fired pizza oven to sling pies. They invented a blueberry goat cheese pizza for my lactose-intolerant peeps and it is amazing.

Grillz BBQ & Smokehouse has become a favorite in our hometown of Crockett. They show up early and slowly smoke their meats on site for a mouthwatering experience.

Mommy’s Yummys Mediterranean Food will offer delicacies including Gyros, Falafel Wraps, Schwarma, Dolmas, and Baklava. They were a hit at the Railroad Square Fest this year.

Professor Norton’s Bakery will be on site with fresh coffee and fresh-baked cinnamon buns and soft pretzels.

Green Panda Eats will be on vendor row with a selection of hippy-themed gourmet cookies.

Mare Island Brewing will be on site selling local beer and wines. Soft drinks available at all food vendors. Feel free to bring in your own sealed water bottles.

More vendors TBA. There will be a variety of local artisan craft vendors for all your Hippy needs. For a Vendor application, please email greg@mrhatpresents.com.

DEADHEAD WEEKEND DESTINATION VACATION- Please note this event is scheduled for the day after Jerry Day in San Francisco. Mare Island is a short 35 mi. drive from SF, making this a fantastic weekend for Deadheads to visit the San Francisco Bay to celebrate the Days Between!

No outside food or beverages (sealed water bottles are OK, contact us if you have a medical need), no fireworks, fires, grills, weapons. Please be kind. Please bring your own folding chair if you would like to sit.
