Alice Darrow will be the featured speaker at the November 15th Solano Sunset Rotary Club meeting in Vallejo. Alice was a young Navy Nurse in World War II and is now 104 years old. She will share the heartwarming wartime love story of how she met and married the sailor of her life.
Dean Darrow, a Navy fire controlman, was aboard the battleship USS West Virginia as Japanese torpedoes and bombs slammed his ship. Dean, blown off the deck and wounded, was pulled out of the water and rushed to the base hospital where a small wound on his back was patched up. He continued to perform his duties but didn’t feel right. Months later he was transported back to Pearl Harbor for more tests. X-rays revealed a 7.7-millimeter bullet lodged in the muscle of his heart. Dean next arrived at the Navy hospital on Vallejo’s Mare Island, where a Navy Reserve surgeon from Stanford would make a previously unheard of attempt to remove the bullet from the wall of his beating heart.
Shortly before his surgery Dean asked his nurse Alice if he survived the operation would she go on liberty with him. Come hear the rest of this amazing love story with us!
