OUR HISTORY- HOW’D WE GET TO 14?
Saturday, April 12, 2008 we opened the Mare Island Preserve to the public for regularly scheduled access. It was open just 1-Sat a month. Then, for more than 10 years, we opened it to you free of charge, every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, plus ALL holidays and for up to 2 weeks at a time on holidays, such as Christmas, New Year’s, Spring break and July 4. We created a visitor center, and offered camping and dozens of events, annually. That all stopped abruptly, when the City of Vallejo locked us out and closed the gates. While they have reopened, they have destroyed what many treasure most about this wildlands park. They have displaced our Wildlands Community and manage the Preserve as nothing more than a jogging trail. We’re going to fix that! You and we, the Mare Island Heritage Trust.
