Jazz Society Presents an evening of Big Band Dance & Concert Jazz

Rory Snyder’s Night Jazz Band is a 16 piece professional Big Band that plays Bay Area clubs like Yoshi’s, The Terrace Room, The Empress Theatre and Armando’s as well as concerts at various colleges and schools in the area. The Night Jazz Band plays a wide variety of big band jazz, from the Swing Era for dancing to modern music for a concert setting. Their 1st set of the evening will consist of big band dance music during which the audience is encouraged to dance! The 2nd set will be straight-ahead big band jazz. Saxophonist and educator Rory Snyder was born in Iowa City, IA (New York isn’t the only city so good they named it twice!) but his musical training and experience came from much further west. Rory has a B.A. from UCLA and a Masters in Music from the University of Northern Colorado. He is a Professor Emeritus from Diablo Valley College (DVC) in Pleasant Hill, where he recently retired as the Director of Jazz Studies Program. Rory was also Jazz Director at Santa Clara University and for 16 years was Director of Bands at Homestead High School, where he founded their Jazz Program and built it into one of the top programs in California. Rory is also a member of the California Jazz Alliance Hall of Fame.

As the leader of a small group, Rory’s first CD “New York Sessions” (featuring Michael Woolf and Wallace Roney) came out in 1999. While at DVC Rory produced two excellent recordings with his Night Band: one with Phil Woods (he just might be Phil’s biggest fan, with a collection of over 150 recordings) and another with Toshiko Akiyoshi.

For years, Rory has been an in-demand jazz adjudicator, clinician and guest artist, playing in the Mike Vax Jazz Orchestra and Dave Eshelman’s Jazz Garden Big Band. As a busy sideman, Rory has worked with artists across the jazz spectrum, including Clark Terry, Johnny Mathis, The Smothers Brothers, Don Menza, and The Temptations. The musicians playing in Rory Snyder’s Night Jazz Band are among the Bay Area’s best. Rory counts among his influences such greats as Count Basie, Stan Kenton, Buddy Rich, Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band, Duke Ellington, Bill Holman, Sammy Nestico, Thad Jones/Mel Lewis, and Rob McConnell.

This will be the 31st concert presented by the Vallejo Jazz Society since it’s inception. Previous concerts have featured such Bay Area notables as Kay Kostopoulos, Clairdee, Lavay Smith, Yancie Taylor, Denise Perrier, Larry Vuckovich, Paul Hanson, Pamela Rose, Carlitos Medrano, Calvin Keys, Kenny Washington, Noel Jewkes, Roger Glenn and many more. Tickets for the concert are $15 ($7.50 for VJS members) and may be purchased at the door or online at Refreshments will be available for purchase.
