Dan Levitan, harp

From zesty folk music to the most refined of chamber pieces, this concert is a study in contrasts. Bartok recasts rough-hewn Romanian folk dances into six lively romps for orchestra, while Debussy uses strings and solo harp in his hauntingly lovely “Sacred and Profane Dances.” Ravel’s “Introduction and Allegro,” composed for winds, strings and harp, creates a sensual impression of a serene and mysterious world, while Ibert’s Divertissement is crazy-quilt pastiche of musical styles from baroque to jazz, all intended to serve as incidental music to a farce about the search for a lady’s straw hat. The first march from Poulenc’s “Deux Marches et un intermède” is a bright bauble, a danceable confection created with generous helpings of strings and winds. Darker in character, the “intermède” plays upper and lower strings against each other in a dramatic dance with a Spanish feel. Arthur Honegger’s Pastorale d’été is lovely interlude for strings and winds that recalls the joys of a sumer’s day.
