Friday, June 23 12noon-1:00pm By Land or By Sea: Threats to Successful Osprey Nesting on the Mare Island Strait
Presenter: Myrna Hayes, volunteer Preserve Manager, Mare Island Preserve Mare Island is home to the first documented osprey nests in San Francisco Bay, first attempted in 1990 established in 2003. After that, there was a steady expansion of nest sites and an increase in the number of fledglings. While some sites have remained stable, a combination of human disturbance/nest destruction and deterrent efforts and natural predation by Ravens has taken a significant toll on both stable and new nest sites. Learn the story and think like an environmental advocate and wildlife biologist in a discussion to come up with some solutions that you can help make happen as a citizen advocate to protect our fledgling osprey colony.
Bring your own brown bag lunch. Cold sodas and water are available at the visitor center.
